Poorly managed risk affects much more than safety, it can lead to asset damage, production interruptions, financial loss and reputational impact. MES helps clients identify, understand and manage the risks that threaten business performance. At the heart of our approach is barrier thinking; identifying the hazards that matter, and the preventive and mitigative barriers that keep them controlled throughout an asset's life, improving operational continuity.
What we do
- Hazard identification and risk reviews: HAZID, HAZOP, CHAZOP and SAFOP workshops chaired by operator-approved facilitators, including facilitators approved by Shell, BP and other major operators
- SIL determination and functional safety: LOPA, SIL assessment and IEC 61508/61511 lifecycle support
- Fire, explosion and dispersion modelling and CFD-supported consequence studies
- Quantitative and specialist risk studies: QRA, FERA, EERA, BRA, consequence analysis and SIMOPS risk assessment
- Fire and gas mapping: Detector coverage assessment and optimisation
- Safety-critical elements and performance standards: Identification of the barriers that must perform, designation of safety-critical elements (SCEs), and definition of performance standards using the FARSI basis (Functionality, Availability, Reliability, Survivability and Interaction)
- Bow-tie and barrier management: Mapping major-accident hazards to the preventive and mitigative barriers that control them, and identifying where those barriers are missing or degraded
- Safety Case, ALARP and regulatory compliance: COMAH and Safety Case support for UK and European regimes, HSE Case support in the Middle East, and ALARP demonstration
- Process Safety and Risk Management Obligations: OSHA PSM and EPA RMP compliance support, including process hazard analyses and revalidations, management of change, mechanical integrity, incident investigation and compliance audits
- Safety studies for US LNG and pipeline facilities: Hazard identification, LNG siting and exclusion-zone analysis and design-spill, vapour-dispersion, overpressure and thermal-radiation modelling under FERC requirements and 49 CFR Part 193. For gas and hazardous-liquid pipelines, support includes high-consequence-area assessment under 49 CFR Parts 192 and 195
- Lifecycle support: Risk assessment and process safety support from technology development, concept, FEED and EPC through operations, modifications and life extension
Typical outcomes
- Reduced operational interruptions
- Stronger business continuity
- Better investment decisions
- Improved risk awareness
- Enhanced operational confidence
